Aston Martin AMR1 Group C1

Following an extremely severe impact, RML Historic precisely restored an Aston Martin AMR1 Group C1 chassis, originally built in 1989 by Proteus Technology, to its original glory.

The car suffered extensive front-end damage in a high-speed crash at Spa-Franchorchamps, Belgium. It had to be totally stripped by RML, any undamaged and useable components retrieved for the rebuild and the monocoque chassis repaired by the remoulding and grafting in of new sections.

The carbon-composite repair was carried out by specialists and long term partners of RML, Carbon Fibre Technologies Ltd (CFT). Where practical, given that materials and processes had moved on since the chassis was first built, the original design specification was followed, with technical input from RML. The moulds required were taken off the original pattern - after considerable refurbishment - from which all the AMR1 monocoques were made.

By any standards this was a complex repair and the owner Paul Whight insisted that it should be performed to the highest industry standards while retaining the original design integrity of this historic car.

The remainder of AMR1 was rebuilt by RML using visually undamaged components from the crashed car that were inspected and crack-tested, parts from Paul Whight’s spares inventory, and new parts manufactured by RML and/or its specialist subcontractors and suppliers.

A refurbished engine/transmission unit and rear chassis and suspension 'package' was delivered to RML for fitting to the monocoque and front suspension/steering prior to final assembly, together with new and repaired re-painted bodywork.

The AMR 1 ran successfully shortly afterwards.
