History and Timeline

History

The long and rich motorsport history of the Mallock family dates back to 1936, when Ray's father, Major Arthur Mallock competed with his very first Austin 7-based special.

Over the course of the next 20 years, Arthur developed ever more ingenious ways of extracting performance from a variety of Austin 7-based cars over a range of motorsport disciplines including trials, hillclimbs, sportscar and even single-seater racing.

Arthur's philosophy throughout were that his cars use the principles of low weight, low cost, and above all simplicity. In 1958, he built the first U2 racer - Mk1.

The early cars were sold as both kits and rolling chassis, proving already to be an immensely popular route into what until then was essentially a rich man's sport. U2's of various marques and guises have provided hundreds of people with the opportunity to go racing, plus learn about the engineering and dynamics involved in race car competition.

Arthur continued to race and usually win with his cars in a wide variety of formulas including 1172 sports cars, Monoposto, Formula Junior, Formula 3, Formula Ford, Clubmans, Hill Climbs, Trials and Drag racing and even ventured into International Formula 2 in 1967 with remarkable results.

Brothers Richard and Ray Mallock soon showed that they shared their father's enthusiasm and aptitude for the sport, both being Championship winners behind the wheel of cars bearing the Mallock family name. They joined Arthur in the early seventies to develop the business, between them creating a series of iconic championship winning club racing cars.  Richard has continued to develop and produce ever faster and more sophisticated Mallock racing cars which continue to win championships to this day (www.mallocksports.co.uk).

Globally renowned motorsport luminaries like Andy Priaulx, Frank Sytner, Harvey Postlethwaite, Martin Groves, Max Mosley, Patrick Head and Will Hoy all drove Mallock U2’s in their early motorsport careers.

Ray combined his involvement with the family business with a successful career as a racing driver in both single seater racing cars and sports prototypes.  In 1979 Ray set up his own motorsport business, which combined his engineering and driving skills and became the RML Group of today.

2008 sees the 50th anniversary of the first production Mallock U2 (www.mallockclub.com). With Arthur's debut in 1936, the Mallock family have been involved in the building, development and operation of competition cars for over 72 years. Few if any can match this motorsport heritage.
