Two Podiums For The Cruzes Out Of The Chaotic Marrakech Races

02/05/2010

Second places for Huff in Race 1 and Muller in Race 2 in incident-packed Sunday

MARRAKECH, 2nd May 2010 – The Chevrolet team emerged from a difficult day of races in Marrakech with an excellent result: two podiums and a further point finish, which will be extremely useful in the race for the title.

Rob Huff finished 2nd in Race 1 and so did Yvan Muller in Race 2, after catching a sixth place as well in the morning race. A 9th position in the first race was little consolation for Alain Menu, who lived one of the blackest week-ends in his career. The Swiss was sent into the wall in race 2, the third accident in three days, and Rob Huff also suffered the same fate in the afternoon race.

With three attempts to have a proper start in Race 1, which was later shortened, and only two racing laps in Race 2, because of the many track incidents, the safety-car was the only real star in Marrakech...

Yvan Muller (6th/2nd) "It was two difficult races, and it was important to be very cautious to avoid mistakes on such a track. I took a good start in Race 1, but unfortunately I got a little bit stuck when the two Seats went straight in front of me. After that, I preferred to secure my position as the cars in front of me had pulled away. In Race 2, it was much better and after a good start, I found myself second behind Priaulx. At the restart after the safety car period, I could have passed him, as he took more time to warm up his tires, but it was a little bit too risky. All in all, I am happy to have scored some good points for the championship. It is still a long way and the gaps are minimal".

Rob Huff (2nd/Ret) :  "I took a very good start in Race 1, remaining just behind the leader car of Tarquini. Later, I went sideways at some point, I almost lost the car but luckily I could save the situation and stay ahead of Monteiro, then the safety-car froze all positions. In Race 2, I was in the middle of the pack at the start and I've been sandwiched between the Seats of Barth and Coronel, hitting the wall. It's OK, this is the kind of thing that can happen, but I hope it won't happen anymore this season...''

Alain Menu (9th/Ret): "A week-end to forget as quickly as possible... That's not was I was expecting at all. In Race 1, Priaulx came out of the last chicane much better than I, it was a surprise to see him coming so fast and I couldn't close the door. Nice move from Andy! That meant that instead of being on the pole for Race 2, I started 9th.  I fought with Farfus, and I managed to overtake him but he hit me in the back, sending me into the wall. Nothing I could do, it's so frustrating. The season is still long and I look forward to a different story in Monza".

Eric Neve: "We are happy to come out of Marrakech with some heavy points for the Championship. It was not an easy week-end and the quality of the show was not that great. Still, I hope the many Chevrolet guest from Morocco, Algeria and Egypt enjoyed the excitement of touring car racing and were pleased to see our drivers on both podiums".
