July 2nd marks the silver anniversary of the founding of Ray Mallock Limited in 1984. Over the past 25 years, RML have grown into a diversified group and one of the motorsport industry's 'quiet giants', with a breadth and depth of experience, expertise, and success matched by few competitors – achievements recognized in 2008 by the Motorsport Industry Association's Business of the Year Award.
Today's RML Group emerged from the motorsport activities of the Mallock family, which date back to 1936, when Major Arthur Mallock created his first Austin 7-based special. 1958 saw the debut of the famed U2 series of club racers, which launched the careers of dozens of successful drivers and engineers. Brothers Richard and Ray Mallock followed in their father's footsteps in the 1970s, both winning championships at the wheel of cars bearing the Mallock name.
Ray continued to build a successful career behind the wheel, climbing the single-seater ladder on his way to becoming a professional driver with the Aston Martin Group C sportscar programme in the early 1980s. The latter step led to Ray setting up RML Motorsport in 1984 to take advantage of his combined engineering, organisational, and driving skills. The first fruits of this effort came in 1986, when Ray led Ecurie Ecosse's successful assault on the FIA World Sportscar Championship's C2 division.
Since then, RML have demonstrated skill at every type of motorsport discipline as a lead or supporting partner on a wide range of projects. RML contract with major and niche automakers to support their motorsport and marketing goals through the design, production, development, and operation of competition cars on their behalf. Past and present clients include Aston Martin, Vauxhall, Opel, Nissan, Saleen, MG, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, and Chevrolet. The last three decades have seen race wins and championship titles in every category and series contested by RML, in arenas as diverse as touring cars, GTs, sports prototypes, rallying, and stock cars.
Current programmes include running the three-car Chevrolet Cruze team in the FIA World Touring Car Championship, fielding a Lola-Mazda LMP2 in the Le Mans Series and Le Mans 24 Hours with RML director Mike Newton, production of the SLR 722 GT racing version of the McLaren Mercedes roadgoing supercar, and a return this season to the British Touring Car Championship using the older Chevrolet Lacetti, with drivers Jason Plato and Mat Jackson both winning on their debuts and a third entry recently added for rising star James Nash.
Other racing-related RML Group activities include race engine development, motorsport event management, and advanced components and products for the racing industry. In addition to its motorsport contracts, RML also undertake high-performance road car engineering projects (often on a confidential basis) for clients such as Saleen, Nissan, and Chevrolet.
RML's success is firmly based on its corporate values of teamwork, continuous improvement, customer focus, quality with efficiency, integrity, and will to win. 120 group employees work at RML's 4200 sqm facility, which houses 11 departments and three secure project areas. The company's operations intelligently balance in-house capabilities with specialist outsourcing, and are supported by rigorous cost control, accounting, and audit processes as well as a professional human resources department.
Looking back on the legacy of the last quarter-century, Ray Mallock observed, "It is a great tribute to the entire RML team past and present that we have been consistent winners for 25 years, even through the kind of economic downturn we are experiencing now. We have exciting plans to build on our current success in the future, when we expect to deliver even more for our partners and everyone at RML."
