Le Mans Series glory for RML

12/11/2007

The RML MG-Lola team is celebrating after being finally crowned the 2007 Le Mans Series (LMS) LMP2 champions.

The Wellingborough-based team did not race in the final round of the championship, the Mil Milhas at the Interlagos circuit, Brazil, which took place yesterday (November 11).

RML finished the season with 36 points, six ahead of nearest rivals Quifel ASM. With Brazilian Tommy Erdos and England's Mike Newton at the wheel, the team secured the championship with a strong second place in the first round at Monza, the home of Italian motorsport, before a sixth place at Valencia. This was followed by back-to-back victories at the Nurburgring and Spa-Franchorchamps (where RML made history by becoming the first LMP2 team to visit the overall podium with third place). The LMP2 title was clinched with a fourth place, fittingly at 'home' at the Silverstone 1000km in September.

As their prize for winning the championship, RML now have an automatic entry to the 2008 Le Mans 24 Hours, and will be aiming to take victory for the third time in four years.

Ray Mallock, founder and Chief Executive of RML Group, said: "This is a huge achievement for our sportscar team, and RML Group as a whole. Under the leadership of Phil Barker, our Race Team Director, we have now enjoyed a major sportscar success in each of the past three seasons with back-to-back victories in the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2005 and 2006, and now the LMS LMP2 championship itself.

"Both Mike and Tommy did a fantastic, consistent job throughout the season, scoring points in every race we entered, and taking two superb victories. May I congratulate them, and all our highly talented and dedicated staff who have been involved in this amazing accomplishment, without their hard work none of this would have been possible.

"We will enjoy this success, but are already preparing for our return to both Le Mans and the LMS in 2008 with great anticipation."

The team will head to the Pavilion d'Armenonville on December 1 for the prize-giving ceremony.
