WELLINGBOROUGH [UK] – Thursday 26 June 2014: RML is delighted to announce attendance at this weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, as the event celebrates ‘The Unbeatable Champions of Motor sport’.
An invitation like no other, RML will join a plethora of motoring greats with an exciting display of three current projects showcasing the UK firm’s diverse portfolio of engineering capability. Entered under the Modern Racing Saloon banner, Michael Mallock will demonstrate the 2012 FIA WTCC Chevrolet Cruze, as designed and raced to championship victory by the Wellingborough-based team with Rob Huff at the helm.
A loyal competitor within the touring car arena, RML has been a major player in the tin-top world since 1992. The first major OEM contract being penned in 1993 with Nissan Motorsport, RML’s rise to success continued with further contracts from Vauxhall and most recently, Chevrolet. With a total of eight British Touring Car Championship titles and seven FIA WTCC titles to date, RML also has an enviable track-record with customer teams claiming independent successes across the globe.
The 2012 Cruze marked the last hurrah for Chevrolet, with the automaker leaving the championship at the end of that year. However as the longest-standing marque in the series, RML delivered sixty-eight victories and triple back-to-back Driver & Constructor Championships – marking General Motors’ only World Championship titles in any series.
RML would go on to compete in the FIA WTCC in 2013, entering for the first time as a privateer and adding another fourteen victories to the record books, plus the Drivers’ Championship for Yvan Muller.
This year RML continues to supply and support a customer programme in the WTCC, with the all new, ‘clean sheet’ TC1 RML-Cruze – already a proven success with the first podium claimed at the opening race weekend in Marrakech and victory for Gianni Morbidelli at the third race meeting of the season.
Onto the endurance racing stage and just a little over two weeks ago the Nissan ZEOD RC was lighting up the headlines as it vied to become the world’s fastest electric racing car at the Le Mans 24 Hours, developed and run by RML. In partnership, the Zero Emissions on Demand Race Car made its debut in Garage 56, achieving two ground-breaking records; the first to indeed become the fastest electric race car, reaching a top speed of 300km/h along the Mulsanne Straight in qualifying – powered by Japanese star Satoshi Motoyama – and crucially for Nissan, to complete one lap of the much-revered La Sarthe circuit in full electric mode.
Featuring a duel electric/internal combustion engine powertrain, with a pair of 110kW electric motors and a 40kg, 400 horsepower 1.5litre three-cylinder turbo engine, the ZEOD RC revolutionised Le Mans and takes its place in history as a truly ground-breaking engineering masterpiece.
The ZEOD RC will be on static display throughout the event.
Appearing for the first time at Goodwood will be a third project currently in progress at RML – the Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge concept car. Entering under ‘First Glance’, the Eau Rouge – a luxury performance saloon powered by a 3.8 litre V6 TT GT-R engine – will master the hillclimb on demo runs.
Contracted by Infiniti, RML has been involved in the build and development of the prototype vehicle to create a 560bhp all-wheel-drive ‘supersaloon’. With one very clear objective in mind, to challenge the market leaders and raise global awareness of Infiniti’s performance brand.
As 2014 quickly moves into the second half, this year will undoubtedly be logged in RML’s history as a ground-breaking season – testament to the Group continually diversifying and expanding in line with the ever-changing needs and requirements of its highly respectable OEM partnerships.
