RML’s Chief Engine Engineer, Arnaud Martin has been awarded the much-coveted ‘Race Engine Designer of the Year’ in a night of celebration during the RACE TECH World Motorsport Symposium.
Arnaud, head of engine design at RML, the leading team that runs the Chevrolet Cruzes in the World Touring Car Championship, produced an entirely new 1.6 litre engine from a clean sheet of paper. While the blue and white cars picked up 21 wins in 25 races, claimed the pole position at every single round and also led for more than twice as many laps as all the other teams combined, what was particularly impressive about this engine was that Arnaud and his small team of engineers produced it in just eight months on a very limited budget.
It was this inspiring achievement that just edged Arnaud ahead of an ultra competitive and highly regarded list of nominees, including Rob White (Renault F1), Ulrich Baretzky (Audi Motorsport) and Francois Coudrain (Peugeot Sport).
On receiving the award from Soheila Kimberley, RACE TECH’s Publishing Director, Arnaud said: “I am honoured and truly grateful that our work has been so recognised and I thank my team at RML for all their hard work and dedication. We spent eight intense months designing and building the 2011 1.6 litre turbo charged engine for the Chevrolet Cruze.
In order to meet the parameters set by the FIA for this new phase of race engine design we had to reach a higher level of performance in the new engine than that of 2010’s 2.0 litre normally aspirated with the additional challenge of ensuring superior reliability in order to match the new rules – that meant only one engine change was permitted last season and now in 2012 we are not permitted any. The tremendous performance of the engine over the course of 2011 is testament to the skill and commitment put in by what is a relatively young department. It was only in 2006 that I created the RML Engines division so it makes me very proud that we join such a prestigious list of previous winners, and in such a fiercely competitive category.”
Ray Mallock, CEO: “It’s a superb and well deserved award for Arnaud. It’s actually quite rare nowadays that a completely new ground-up design is embarked on for motorsport programmes. Arnaud and his team achieved an outstanding result in delivering an engine that was 100% reliable and dominated the World Championship in its first season.”
