Esteban Guerrieri takes victory in RML Chevy Cruze TC1 in WTCC opener
Wellingborough (UK) – 10th April 2017:
Esteban Guerrieri has claimed victory in Morocco in the opening round of the WTCC racing the RML Chevy Cruze TC1 under the Campos Racing banner. The two Chevrolets of Tom Coronel of team ROAL Motorsport and Guerrieri, qualified first and second respectively on the grid for race one and ninth for Guerrieri, with Coronel starting out in 10th for race two.
In race one both Coronel and Guerrieri were off to a great start leading for the first half of the race despite a number of incidents throughout the field resulting in substantial pressure from behind. At Turn 3 on lap 12 Coronel struggled with a braking issue and ran wide, relinquishing his lead to Guerrieri and falling down to seventh.
Once in the lead Guerrieri took control of the race and remained out front, taking the chequered flag 0.654 seconds ahead of Thed Björk. Home favourite Mehdi Bennani claimed the final spot on the podium. Coronel finished eighth, 20.390 seconds off Campos Racing’s leading RML Chevy Cruze TC1, having lost a further position to the SLR Citroën of Tom Chilton.
In race two Guerrieri set the fasted lap of the weekend. Setting off from the pit lane and facing a drive-through penalty for work his team undertook on his car prior to the race, the Argentinian showed his pace and finished 13th. Coronel, moved up the field two places and claimed eighth keeping Rob Huff and his Citroën C-Elysée securely at bay behind.
Starting from pole Tiago Monteiro took a controlled win, leading home Honda team-mate Norbert Michelisz in second. Nestor Girolami of Polestar Cyan Racing completed the second race podium.
Round two of the WTCC heads to Italy with all the action kicking off on 28th April 2017 at the iconic Autodromo Nazionale, Monza.
