Tom Coronel’s RML Chevrolet Cruze TC1 takes second place in Macau
Wellingborough (UK) – 20th November 2017:
The penultimate round of the WTCC was held at the Circuito da Guia for the Race of Macau in the Macau Peninsula in China. Tom Coronel from ROAL Motorsport was joined on track by 43 year old driver Po Wah Wong, racing in his debut event under the Campos Racing banner.
Coronel placed his RML Chevrolet Cruze TC1 in eighth position during Friday’s qualifying session however Wong was unable to set a time after hitting the wall through the Solitude Esses and stopping at Paiol. Munnich Motorsport Citroen driver Rob Huff took pole position setting a new WTCC lap record with a time of 2:23.995 around the 6.120 km circuit.
Coronel line up his RML Chevrolet Cruze TC1 in second place to start Saturday’s reverse grid opening race behind Sébastien Loeb Racing’s Mehdi Bennani after Polestar Cyan Racing’s Néstor Girolami moved from pole to fifteenth due to an engine change. Wong was placed eighteenth.
Bennani lead from the start to claim his third victory of the season. The race was red flagged when Castrol Honda World Touring Car Team driver Norbert Michelisz clipped the barrier and blocked the track at Police resulting in a two lap countback. Coronel followed Bennani to take his best result of the season with second place and Honda Racing Team JAS’ Ryo Michigami completed the podium in third. Wong held position throughout to cross the line in eighteenth.
Sunday’s wet main race started from behind the safety car which ran for three laps until the field was released to compete. The top three drivers finished in their starting positions with Huff leading to take his ninth Circuito da Guia win trailed by Michelisz in second and Sébastien Loeb Racing driver Tom Chilton claiming third. Coronel moved up two places to finish in the points in sixth however Wong was a non-race starter.
The WTCC now heads to Losail International Circuit in Qatar for the final round of the 2017 season commencing on 30th November. Coronel currently sits sixth in the WTCC Trophy Drivers’ Championship with 61.5 points and remains 11th overall in the Drivers’ standings with 69 points.
Top of the in the WTCC Trophy Drivers’ Championship is Tom Chilton with 120 points with Bennani 0.5 points behind. Leading the Drivers’ Championship is Polestar Cyan Racing driver Thed Björk with 255.5 points followed by Michelisz with 249 points.
