Double points finish for both RML Chevrolet Cruze TC1s in Argentina
Wellingborough (UK) – 17th July 2017:
The Circuito Termas de Río Hondo in Argentina played host to round six of the World Touring Car Championship for the two RML Chevrolet Cruze TC1s. Home favourite Esteban Guerrieri of Campos Racing put his local knowledge into practice to qualify fourth with Tom Coronel from ROAL Motorsport lining up in twelfth, returning to the track after his practice crash in Vila Real three weeks ago.
Starting out in sixth due to Sunday’s opening race reversed grid, Esteban worked his way up the field into fourth but gained a home podium and third position after Sebastien Loeb Racing driver Tom Chilton illegally passed Lada Vesta driver Yann Ehrlacher on the opening lap and was handed a five second time penalty placing him fourth. Coronel began in eleventh and worked his way through the grid to finish in the points in ninth. Ehrlacher claimed his first WTCC victory with Sebastien Loeb Racing’s driver Mehdi Bennani in second.
The main race also saw a double points finish for both RML Chevrolet Cruze TC1s customer team drivers. Guerrieri who lined up in fourth held his position until the flag whereas Coronel moved from 12th up two places, crossing the line in 10th. Norbert Michelisz and Tiago Monteiro from Honda Racing Team JAS topped the podium with Thed Bjork from Polestar Cyan Racing taking third.
Using his home round to deliver one of his best weekends to date Guerrieri currently sits fourth in the WTCC Trophy Drivers Championship and remains eighth overall in the drivers’ standings with 113 points while Coronel is in sixth and 11th in total with 34 points. It’s a new track and new destination up next on the calendar as the WTCC heads to Ningbo International Speedpark for the Race of China with rounds 13 and 14 set to begin on 13th October.
