WELLINGBOROUGH [UK] – Saturday 24 May 2014: Gianni Morbidelli has once again set a new record with his, and indeed the RML-Cruze’s, maiden 2014 pole position in the FIA World Touring Car Championship.
As the first man to break Citroen’s win tally, and now their pole position dominance, Morbidelli says: “I was fairly optimistic that we could do well here in Austria, but to be honest I am a bit surprised that we wind up in P1 here: in Q1 and Q2 I had been able to use slipstream to improve. This is not something that you can count on in Q3, you’re all alone there, your car, the track and you: that’s why I am so happy.
“I am going to relish my maiden WTCC pole position: together with all the guys at Muennich Motorsport we have made progress race by race, step by step, working hard on small improvements. Don’t forget that we’ve only been able to make it to Q1 for the first time in Slovakia, and now we managed to be competitive enough to challenge the series’ best for the top grid spots of race one, something that it’s quite an achievement, trust me.
“We’re aware that especially at this venue the RML Chevrolet Cruze is a car to be reckoned with and we’ll try to make the most of this opportunity. As much as we can be happy for our pole position here, tomorrow is another day. We don’t forget that two corners will put a lot of strain on the tyres, the front left in particular. That’s why with my race engineer Charles Hodge and the guys of Rene’s team we’ll have to find a way to push hard enough to keep the Citroen guys at bay and at the same time to save the tyres until the checkered flag is waved. But everybody is happy to burn the night oil if you do this to be in front, and today we are!”
