Opening Race Win for Coronel in Vila Real

Wellingborough (UK) – 28th June 2016:

The RML Chevrolet Cruze, off the back of a double WTCC Trophy win for James Thompson in Russia, has come up trumps again with a stunning Pole position for Race 1 and then a lights to flag victory for Tom Coronel in the ROAL Motorsport run Cruze.

The fan’s favourite, Coronel claimed pole position on Saturday by taking 10th place during Q2, with the Opening Race grid set by the top 10 drivers in qualifying being reversed.

In Race 1, Coronel made a fantastic start from pole position in his ROAL Motorsport Chevrolet Cruze, while Sébastien Loeb Racing Citroën driver Chilton squeezed past the LADA of Nicky Catsburg through the opening turns of the race.

From there, the two Toms were inseparable as they pulled away from the rest, but although Chilton kept the pressure on his former team-mate and WTCC Trophy rival, with less than six tenths of a second splitting them at the finish, he was unable to prevent the Dutchman repeating his triumph from Marrakech.

Tom Coronel later confirmed it had been an easy win despite the pressure “This is a really challenging circuit but I knew I had good chance here, so I always said Morocco, Vila Real and Japan should be good to me, and until now everything came out so I’m really happy. My race was a little bit under pressure from Chilton, I was a little bit faster in the high speed stuff and finally I could take the points where he could out-brake me with a little distance. So to be honest it was for me a reasonably easy drive.”

This was Tom’s second Opening Race victory of the FIA World Touring Championship season, previously at the Moscow Raceway, James Thompson, The British privateer had overtaken category leader Mehdi Bennani for top spot in the Opening Race before leading from the front to win the class for independent racers in the Main Race.

Driving a Chevrolet RML Cruze TC1 for ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport, Thompson said: “We were really pleased after qualifying and in the Opening Race today we were just trying to keep the car out of trouble. The Opening Race was a little bit difficult because I got such a bad start and had to let everybody by and work my way through the pack. There was no point trying to do anything stupid, especially with the Main Race coming up. But to cut a long story short we did the best job we could but these guys were significantly quicker and we were made to really fight. Once the race settled down sixth place was a really good finish for us.”
