RML Chevrolet Cruze TC1s final race of the WTCC season in Qatar
Wellingborough (UK) – 4th December 2017:
The final round of the 2017 World Touring Car Championship was held at the Losail International Circuit in Qatar for the two RML Chevrolet Cruze TC1s. Tom Coronel from ROAL Motorsport was joined by Kris Richard returning to represent Campos Racing after his debut drive in October for the Race of Japan.
Friday’s qualifying saw Richard place his RML Chevy Cruze in eighth with Coronel lining up in 12th. Due to a reverse grid for the 10 lap opening race, Richard started out in third but fell back through the field to finish in 12th just behind Coronel who progressed one place from his starting position. Tom Chilton claimed his third victory of the season for Sebastien Loeb Racing, overtaking team-mate Mehdi Bennani with two laps remaining. RC Motorsport’s Kevin Gleason completed the podium.
Starting out in qualifying order for the final race of the season Richard made up two places finishing in the points in sixth, gaining a position from a collision between Chilton and Bennani as well as overtaking Polestar Cyan Racing’s Volvo factory driver Yvan Muller. Coronel completed the scheduled 12 laps of the 5.38 km circuit to finish in 11th. Esteban Guerrieri, who started the season racing the RML Chevy Cruze for Campos Racing but moved to Honda Racing Team JAS to replace injured Tiago Monteiro, took the top spot of the podium followed by Rob Huff and Nicky Catsburg.
Coronel concluded the WTCC Trophy Drivers’ Championship in sixth with 68.5 points and 11th overall in the Drivers’ standings with 69 points. Top of the WTCC Trophy Drivers’ Championship goes to Tom Chilton with 138 points followed by Huff and Bennani. Thed Björk wins the Drivers’ Championship for Polestar Cyan Racing with 283.5 points followed by Norbert Michelisz and Chilton.
